The Afghan girl featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine in 1985 captured the attention of a generation. Plan – for a portrait shoot, scour your surroundings and plan your shot before you set up your subject. Look for a plain background to shoot against for close-up head shots. Build Rapport – the most important part about photographing people is to make sure your subject feels comfortable. Establish good rapport, engage them in conversation – this will be especially important if you’re not working with a professional model as many individuals feel nervous about having their photograph taken. Always discuss the shots you’re planning and be prepared to alter your plans if he or she does not feel comfortable with the concept.

Personality – lighting, background, framing – while the photographer is in control of the elements of the shot, the subject is in control of the photo. You will need to work with your subject’s personality to create an engaging image. Remember that the definition of a portrait shot is an “artistic representation of a person” capturing the personality, emotion and mood of the subject. For example, environmental portraits that are taken in the subject’s natural surroundings such as the home can make a powerful composition and reveal a lot of depth about the person.

Posing – as a photographer, you’re expected to give stage directions to your model. You want the position to look natural and to present your subject in the best light. Look for any flaws in your subject and pose them in a way that hides these imperfections – for example, you can minimise the appearance of a large nose by raising the chin slightly. Meanwhile, make sure the shots look and feel natural – let kids be kids and make sure group shots convey the relationship between the individuals.

Equipment - not all digital cameras are built the same and you’ll need to ensure you have the right equipment for your portrait shot. Many experts recommend the rule of 3 point lighting for portrait photography (key light, fill light and rim light).

The whole package is great – camera, lens, dvd’s, bag, cleaning kit, card and reader, etc…. As a first time DSLR user, the camera is very intuitive and forgiving. Priced separately, this package would appear to be well over 0 more. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t get this package if you are just starting out. I ended up purchasing another Ultra SD card, a UV filter and a lens cap strap (to keep the lens cap attached to the lens when you take it off). I’m certain at some point I will get a 55-200 lens as well but this one suits me just fine for now. I’ve taken some of the best pictures I’ve ever taken with the D3000!

Market watchers in the television segment are aware of the competition between the two major flat screen models, LCD and Plasma. Public discussions and debates are also going on about the various merits and demerits of both these types of television. I just purchased this camera after returning the Fuji FinePix waterproof camera 9.00.

This camera is just fantastic. The speed of taking pictures is incredible (no waiting between shots).

I have an expensive high end Oympus and wanted a small camera to take quick shots. This camera is just the answer.

I can snap clear/perfect shots at a moments notice while on the move and never again miss a shot while the camera is focasing as I did with my high end camera.

I had considered the Cannon ELF 12MP and the Sony Cyber Shot 12MM, both great cameras, but am glad I decided on the Nikon CoolPix 12MP. This camera was recommended by a professional photographer friend of mine.

My friend also recommended a well padded case. This is for 2 reasons, first so the lens does not get knocked out of alignment while in a pocket, purse, or belt and second, a well padded case will gradually absorb any humidity/moisture and keep the camera dry.

I had a Coolpix 4800 for several years, and despite the fact that it boasted only 4 MP, i feel that the photos were far superior to the ones i am getting out of the s630. I was excited to find another nikon with a lot of zoom, and expected the same quality as what i had previously. Unfortunatly, i was dissapointed.

Outdoors the colors are great and crisp, but i have yet to shoot an indoor shot that makes me really happy. as a mom taking pics of her kids all the time, this is frustrating beyond words. the colors take on an unnatural reddish orangey hue, and i constantly get blurring, even with image stabilization. I have tried Auto mode and scene selecter and every type of scene possible, but no matter what i do, the color quality is just off and fuzziness common. After several months i finally figured out that the best way to get my kids and not worry about them moving and therefore blurring or getting that ghostly motions quality, as they invariably do, is to use sports mode, but then the camera drops to 3MP. As a result the photos are not really crisp, which when buying a camera with as many MP as this one has regularly, it’s once again, frustrating. On the plus side, I have the red one, which is really fun looking, and i love the size and the zoom is pretty close to my old 4800 (which drowned last summer and is no longer working). Also, it’s really comfortable in a hand of my size and has a nice thumbgrip intentation.

**Update: After writing this review i realized how truly annoyed i am about my photos, so i actually contacted Nikon through their website and attached two of my photos as examples of their poor quality. They actually told me what to change in my setting to hopefully fix the problem. I shot a few pictures which actually seem much better, but it’s too soon to tell. I will be taking lots of pictures in the days to come and if i see a difference, i will come back, change the rating and let you know how to adjust the menu for better pics!**

Can’t take pictures of anything purple – good camera otherwise – D. Smith – California
This is a good little camera for quick trips to family outings or sites where you don’t want to lugg a big camera along. The main problem I have with this camera is it doesn’t pick up purple hues and captures them as blue. I bought the camera to take pictures of my projects and to post on my website but now I have to figure out another camera to purchase that will capture purples since that is one of my most popular selling colors. USB port door is a little flimsy and the zoom is a little too fast. Overall this is a good camera for someone that is looking for something to take casual pictures and isn’t too serious about the picture quality.

The Nikon Coolpix S-630 , takes great outdoor Portrait or Landscape pictures
On the other hand ; having much difficulty getting a good quality indoor picture under almost any lighting situation… flash or no flash
in these situations the pics. come out very yellow and fuzzy
Also wondering if other owner users are hearing the same ratcheting noise while the camera trys to focus.
I have read the manuel & tryed the many settings options -still a disappointment in picture quality !
Really like to hear any feedback from other owners on this issue !
Ive had H/P & Kodak low cost point & shoot cameras, much older products that took much better all around pics w/such ease of operation !
Expected much more from the Nikon.

D5000 is the newest offering from Nikon which is supposed to be a replacement from the D60 and the D40. This can be attributed to the growing popularity of DSLR and as manifested by the recent boom of manufacturers releasing either bulked-up or stripped-down products to make sure that they will not lose their market. However, this strategy has caused confusion among consumers. For instance, when Nikon released the D40 and D60 series (this is before the D5000 was released), many were surprised that the auto-focus motor feature was removed. This simplification of the models made them inexpensive but some customers were dissatisfied because their choices of lenses that can be auto-focused are now limited.

Fortunately, Nikon has now decided to create an upper-entry-level DSLR that sits below the likes of D90. It is then safe to assume that the D5000 is a crossbreed of the D60 and the D90. The D500 has the imaging assembly capabilities, AF module Live View and HD video recording features of the D90. It also has the info panel-based navigation of the D60. In a way, the D5000 is on a higher level than the D60 but not that cutting-edge as the D90.

As mentioned, the D5000 is a crossover between the two former models in terms of its features but it also has its own functions that are unique to this particular model. First of which is the LCD display that can be readjusted. All previous Nikon DSLRs do not have a positionable LCD display and this feature of the D5000 is definitely a plus. You can rotate the LCD display of the D5000 into a number of positions and it can also be flipped to protect the screen display when the D5000 is not in use.

Apart from a positionable LCD display, the D5000 also has an articulated rear LCD and a mirror feature that well fits the small size and inconspicuous appearance of the D5000. However, because of these features, one major setback of the D5000 is that it does not have the best anti-glare coating which is very important when the lenses are exposed to a very broad daylight.

The D5000 also has the capability to set your photos with more scene modes choices. The D500 has a new scene that can lead to a number of several and unique default camera configurations. The D5000 includes preset modes such as Autumn colors and Pet portraits.

There is lots of competition in the market that offers similar types of DSLR in the market but it will be worth to try the D5000 for a more relaxed photography sessions.
